International Media Trends:

International Media Trends

Media is changing are day to day lives all around the world. Trends are sweeping the nation and carrying over to other countries. An innovation that is spreading word quickly of trends around the globe is Snapchat’s subscription feature. Snapchat is a social media app where users can ‘snap’ each other back with images or videos. The subscription feature is changing the way we use the app as it acts as an online magazine store of sorts. Snapchat features popular magazines like Seventeen, Vice, Men’s Health, Wired, etc.

The app also has features like Art Insider where it covers a wide range of art trends around the world. The subscriptions release one or two episodes a week and have different seasons. One of the newest trends is sidewalk art created by Norwegian artist Dino Tomic. Where he paints with an invisible water-repellent solvent. When asked his sidewalk masterpieces by Art Insider he said “The faster you work, the more you can see, literally because it evaporates really, really fast, so if I want to be able to see what I’m doing, I need to work real fast before the design evaporates.” Art Insider also covers multiple different art mediums and artist around the world connecting the art world.

Insider magazine has multiple spin off subscriptions like the one I mentioned before Art Insider and another named Beauty Insider. One of the top stories of the week is a creative hair artist who specializes in curly hair. The artist is called "the queen of colorful curls" her name is Leysa Carrillo. She's a cuban immigrant who has been specializing in curly hair for over ten years now. She states that she's "always been passionate about curly hair mainly because I have it. Because I think I can evolve, create, and take myself to a new level." All her products she uses are used to prevent damage and help retain curls. They recently released an episode where they showed how to do the five best beauty trends around the world from 2018. First up was MOFAJANG colorful pomades that let you try out crazy new hair colors without the total commitment of dye.  It’s a goopy hair mask that temporarily dyes your hair any color you are to scared to try out for real. Along with the fake freckle trend that actually started out in the United States and made its way around the globe. The trend had everyone trying to apply faux freckles to their cheeks and nose some even using a stencil. Eco Stardust was also featured in the top five beauty trends. The trend is biodegradable glitter made with no harmful chemicals to your face and it started up in the United Kingdom. The glitter trend has wedged its way into America and taken over the music festival scene. Makeup and beauty connects countries all over the globe.

The big question is what really connects us around the world? The answer is simple, Food. Food trends are always changing and evolving internationally. These changes are constantly being tested out by new countries and chefs. A food trend sweeping the world right now is Soufflé Pancakes. They originated in Tokyo, Japan they are famous for being tall, light, and outrageously fluffy. The trend started making its way around the globe when London opened the “UK’s 1st Japanese Soufflé Pancake Shop” The towers of fluffy pancakes are popping up on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook feeds everywhere mainly because of the way they wobble. Shortly after the opening in London the United States followed suit when local restaurants in Los Angeles, California began serving the wobbly pancakes for brunch. Soufflé’s opened in LA and serves these pancakes on their all-day brunch menu. The pancakes they offer at their establishment aren’t as precise and structured as those that were created in Japan, however they make up for it in colorful, fluffy, and creative toppings putting their own twist on the new trend. A New York restaurant named The Hungry Post added the fluffy creations to their menu and saw hour long waits begin to form to try the new addition. Finally, San Francisco will be hopping on the pancake bandwagon opening up a new chain named Gram Café & Pancakes. The eater.com recently wrote an article discussing the hot topic and stated that over 43,000 Instagram photos have been using the hashtag #soufflépancakes.’ This is where we see a new food trend connect places like Tokyo to Los Angeles.

International media trends spread like wildfire whether it be through art, fashion, makeup, or food it connects everyone around the world. Social media also boosts the overall effect we have on trends like soufflé pancakes trending on social media prompted the spreading of the product around the globe. We don't recognize how influential things in other countries are as they spread and change the way we do or see topics.

The World of Makeup: Trends and Personalities

The World of Makeup  Over the semester I have done quite a few blogs dealing with makeup and the current trends. So when thinking of an idea for my wild card paper makeup of course worked its way back into my brain. I wanted to take a deeper dive into the world of makeup and even some of my favorite personalities. Now I've stated before most people on campus don't really see my love for makeup because minimal effort is made for my appearance in class. However, I have the whole spread shape tape, false eyelashes, multiple eyeshadow palettes, lipsticks, etc. you name it. I'd also like to give myself some credit with my knowledge of makeup as i've done multiple girls makeup for senior pictures and other events.  Let me start off by introducing you to the basics of makeup and what you may find in any girls makeup bags these days. Typically you start off with a primer for you face, which prepares your skin to take the products you are about to apply. I then head in...

Digital and Media Literacy:

Digital and Media Literacy  I want to start off by saying I had to do some heavy research to know exactly what digital and media literacy was and how it works. Google defines it as "the ability to effectively find, identify, evaluate, and use information." Not everyone has access to these skills which is why there are multiple non profit organizations that work to help teach these skills and more. People around the globe don't have access to the internet like we do on a daily basis which makes learning these skills a lot more difficult.  Last month Apple announced that they will be partnering with non profit organizations to help media literacy programs in the United States and some parts of Europe. Their efforts are going to help advance young peoples ability to use their critical thinking skills that they believe are necessary to survive in such a digital heavy world.  Apple's CEO Tim Cook stated "News literacy is vital to sustaining free press and t...
